Squarespace Website Design Guide for Small Businesses (UK)
Simple, structured websites designed to be found and bring enquiries
If you run a business, your website has one clear job:
Help people understand what you do and make it easy to contact you. But too many small business websites are:
overly complicated
confusing to navigate
slow to load
cluttered with unnecessary graphics
hard to use on mobile
or simply not confidence-building
A website doesn’t need to be flashy. It needs to be clear, structured and fast.
This page explains what makes a website actually work — whether you’re starting from scratch or improving what you already have and how structure, clarity, and visibility help it bring enquiries.
Why This Approach Works
I’m not just building websites - I run small businesses.
I understand what it feels like to:
invest money carefully
need enquiries, not vanity metrics
want something professional without agency complexity
feel frustrated when a website doesn’t “do its job”
Everything I build is based on real-world experience — not theory.
The structure, speed and clarity I use are the same principles I apply to my own businesses.
That’s why it works.
The structure I use isn’t guesswork.
It’s based on building and running my own small businesses, testing what converts, and refining what actually gets results.
Clear layout - Fast loading - Simple navigation.
These aren’t design preferences - They’re practical decisions that improve performance.
For example, Green Fields Home Kill & Butchery now appears at the top of Google for key searches like mobile slaughterman, generating over 600 clicks in 28 days — with around 80% of bookings coming directly from search. .The business is fully booked, and most enquiries come directly through Google search — without Google Ads or paid social media READ THEIR CASE STUDY
That growth is built on strong foundations: clean structure, optimised images and clear messaging.
The same principles I apply to client websites are the ones I use myself, that’s why I’m confident in them.
Squarespace Web Designer UK: Why I Build Small Business Websites on Squarespace
BLOG
When I first started building websites, my goal was simple: create something clear, helpful and easy for customers to use.
My first Squarespace website was Elkadiri Mini Farm and Pet Boutique, where I shared animal care guides and smallholding advice, along with ecommerce selling Pet clothing internationally. Over time, that site grew an online audience through blog content, social media and search visibility. It was also where I first began understanding how Google evaluates websites.
Later, when my partner launched Green Fields Home Kill & Butchery, I built his website using the same approach. By focusing on structure, helpful content and search visibility, the website now generates the majority of its enquiries directly from Google without paid advertising, and I continue to write and publish blogs on the website, as well as managing the business’s online presence.
That experience shaped how I now build websites for my own clients.
You can read more about my experience and why I now choose Squarespace for small business websites in the UK in this Blog: Squarespace Web Designer UK: Why I Build Small Business Websites on Squarespace. Either is absolutely fine.
Why I Use Squarespace
Squarespace is one of the strongest platforms for small businesses.
I love Squarespace because it gives you:
A clean, professional foundation
Secure hosting and built-in SSL
Reliable performance
Built-in blogging tools
Simple content editing
No plugin management
No complicated systems
Most importantly, your website sits inside your own Squarespace account - Under your name - With your login details. - You own it.
Why My Design Style Is Intentional
You’ll notice my websites are:
CLEAN - STRUCTURED - SPACIOUS - BOLD BUT MINIMAL - FASTLOADING!
There’s a reason for that.
I don’t use heavy background graphics or decorative overlays that look impressive but slow your site down.
Fast loading matters.
Google prefers it - Your customers prefer it.
Every image is resized and optimised properly.
No unnecessary design “noise” - No slow-loading clutter.
Just professional structure. - see our PASHA FLOWERS CASE STUDY

What Does “Mobile-First” Actually Mean?
Most people now browse on their phone. All images on our Pasha Flowers examples above are on Mobile-First!
Mobile-first design means your website is structured to work perfectly on smaller screens first — not squeezed down from a desktop version.
That means:
Text is readable without zooming
Buttons are easy to tap
Layout flows naturally
Nothing feels cramped
If your website doesn’t work properly on mobile, people leave quickly.
What Makes a Website Actually Work?
A good website isn’t about having lots of pages.
It’s about having the right structure.
For most small businesses, that means:
A clear homepage
Simple navigation
Fast-loading images
Services or products explained clearly
Trust-building content (reviews, photos, about)
A contact page that works properly
You can have a beautiful website - but if visitors can’t quickly understand what you offer, it won’t convert.
Why Speed and Structure Matter for SEO
BLOG
Slow websites cost enquiries.
People won’t wait.
Google won’t prioritise slow, heavy pages.
A properly built Squarespace website with optimised images and clean layout performs better long-term.
A Subtle But Important Detail
You’ll also notice I include structured quick links on websites where appropriate.
Quick links:
Help users navigate easily
Improve clarity
Strengthen internal linking
Support SEO foundations
Even small details like this improve how Google understands your site.
They’re not flashy. But they’re effective.
You can also view my professional background on LinkedIn — it’s linked directly in the website footer.

Not sure how all the pieces of your website actually work together?
This quick 1-minute video pulls everything together — your website, visibility, Google Search Console, business listings, and ongoing support — so you can see how it all fits as one complete approach.
Most small businesses treat these as separate things…building a website, setting up Google, posting content — without really connecting them. That’s where things start to fall apart.
Because when everything is done in isolation, it becomes much harder for Google to understand your business… and for customers to find you.
Your website doesn’t work on its own — it works as part of a bigger system.
Most websites are built as one-off projects… not as something designed to grow and improve over time.
Our Squarespace Website Build includes:
Up to five pages, structured so your customers can quickly understand what you do, if you need more, we can build that too
Mobile-friendly design that works properly on every device
Clear navigation so people can find what they need without thinking
Images resized and optimised for fast loading
Basic SEO setup so your website can be found on Google
Contact form set up so customers can easily get in touch
Full domain connection and technical setup handled for you
If your business needs more pages or a more detailed structure, your website can be built around that — see our Green Fields Home Kill & Butchery Case Study for an example of a more complex build.

Built properly from day one
Your website is set up so it doesn’t just look professional — it’s structured properly behind the scenes too.
That includes the key foundations that help Google read your website clearly, so your pages can appear properly in search and your business starts off on the right foot.
This is a clean SEO setup work that helps your website launch properly from the start.
Most websites are designed, built, and launched within one week once your content is ready.
If you’re not sure what to send, don’t worry — I’ll guide you through it. You will have access to a Client Portal and can even just provide information via Whatsapp Audio or Text Messages.
Why your existing Squarespace Website might not be working:
Many Squarespace websites are built by business owners themselves — and that’s often a great starting point, but what’s missing isn’t effort. It’s structure.
Things like how your pages are organised, how your services are explained, and how your website connects to Google all play a big part in whether your website actually brings enquiries.
You might not realise things like:
• Your website doesn’t clearly tell Google what your business does
• Important structure like headings and page hierarchy aren’t set up properly
• Images don’t include descriptions (alt text), so Google can’t understand them
• There’s no supporting structure like FAQs or internal links to guide users
• Your website looks fine, but doesn’t clearly show customers you solve their problem
These aren’t things most people know when building their own website, but they make a big difference.

Real example
We recently worked with a business whose website looked complete, but wasn’t structured in a way that supported visibility or enquiries.
Nothing was “wrong” at first glance — but underneath, there were small gaps affecting how the business was understood by Google and by potential customers.
After reviewing both the website and their wider online presence, we identified what was missing and how everything connected.
Once these were addressed, the website became clearer, easier to navigate, and properly aligned with how customers actually search.
Everything I do comes back to three things:
Helping your business be found - Making sure it’s clearly understood - and guiding people to take action. Whether that’s a new website, improving your visibility, or ongoing support — it all connects.
Simple or more bespoke — both are covered
Most websites we build start from a clear, structured foundation.
For many small businesses, a 5-page website is exactly what’s needed to get online properly and start generating enquiries. Some businesses need more — whether that’s additional pages, more detailed structure, or a more bespoke setup. That’s absolutely fine.
Every project is scoped based on what your business actually needs, so you’re not paying for anything unnecessary — but you’re also not limited if you need more.
How the Website Build Process Works
Getting a website built doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. I keep everything simple, structured, and focused on getting your business online properly from day one.
1. Initial Chat
We start with a relaxed conversation about your business, what you offer, and what you want your website to do. This helps shape the direction and keeps everything focused on your goals.
2. My Research
Before anything is designed, I carry out the same thinking I use in my Website Visibility Check. This includes looking at how your business should appear on Google, what your customers are likely searching for, and how your pages need to be structured so both people and search engines understand them clearly.
This step ensures your website isn’t just designed to look good — it’s built to be found.
3. Build Phase
Your website is then built on Squarespace, with a clean, professional design and strong SEO foundations in place from the start.
4. Review & Refinement
You’ll have the opportunity to review the site and request any changes. We refine everything together to make sure it feels right and works as it should.
5. Launch & Ongoing Support
Once everything is ready, your website goes live. You’ll also have access to your own Client Portal for communication, updates, and support, so everything stays organised and easy to manage.
Existing Website Not bringing Enquiries - start with a Website Visibility Check
Everything starts with understanding what’s actually happening.
If your website isn’t bringing enquiries, the first step is to look at how it’s currently performing — and what might be holding it back.
A Website Visibility Check gives you clear, practical insight into how your website is working, how your business is being understood online, and where improvements can be made.
SQUARESPACE WEBSITE DESIGN FAQ
Q: Can I update the website myself?
A, Yes. Your website sits inside your own Squarespace account, and you’ll have full access.
Many clients manage their own updates confidently once the structure is in place.
Ongoing support is available only if and when you want it. There are no long-term contracts or pressure.
Q: How do you collect everything needed to build the website?
Once you decide to go ahead, you’ll receive access to a secure Client Portal.
Inside the portal, you’ll find:
– a structured content form
– simple prompts to help you describe your services clearly
– clear guidance on what images are needed
– space to upload files directly
– step-by-step next actions
Everything is organised so nothing feels overwhelming.
You don’t need to write everything perfectly.
You don’t need to understand web design.
You just follow the structure — and I handle the rest.
Worried about the upfront cost?
You’re not alone.
One of the most common reasons small businesses delay getting a website is the cost — especially when you’re just starting out.
That’s why I keep things flexible - A £500 website build can be spread over 5 monthly payments of £100, so you can move forward without needing to do everything at once.
Because for most businesses, it’s not about finding the cheapest option…….It’s about building something properly, in a way that’s manageable.
Done right from the start, it also saves you money long term — avoiding rebuilds, redesigns, and trying to fix something that was never set up properly in the first place.
And you’re not left to figure things out on your own.
You’ll have access to ongoing website and business support, so as your business grows, your website continues to work alongside it.
If that’s something you’d prefer, just mention it when we chat.

Starting a business?
When you're starting a business, there are a lot of decisions to make.
I help you simplify that and focus on what actually matters:
Understanding your business and your customers
Choosing the right platforms (and avoiding the wrong ones)
Setting up your Google Business Profile properly
Planning your website before anything is built - If you’re unsure whether a website is even the right step yet, this guide will help you decide
Making sure your business can be found on Google
Not sure what a website should actually cost?
A small business website in the UK can cost anywhere from £300 to £3,000+, depending on how it’s built, who builds it, and whether it’s set up to actually bring enquiries.
Our blog explains real pricing, what’s often missing from cheaper builds, and what actually makes a website work.
What matters is how they’re built - How well they support your visibility - How clearly Google understands your business, and whether they’re designed to bring enquiries.
Remember that your website is just the start of your Business’s Online Visibility, ensure support is available if and when you need it.
